Cannabis, Vaping, and Prescribing: Interactions You’ll Actually See

Course Description

Cannabis use and vaping are now part of everyday patient care, yet many dental teams are still navigating how to ask about them, how to interpret what they hear, and how those answers may affect treatment. In this podcast-style session, Drs. Tom Viola and Kelly Tanner take a practical look at the interactions clinicians are most likely to encounter, including xerostomia, anxiety modulation, sedation considerations, and prescribing decisions that deserve closer attention. Through a conversational, team-centered approach, they unpack how substance use patterns can influence oral findings, medication interactions, and health history conversations in modern practice. Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of how to ask better questions, recognize relevant risks, and make more informed clinical decisions without judgment and with greater confidence.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify potential oral and pharmacologic implications associated with cannabis use and vaping, including xerostomia, behavioral considerations, and medication-related interactions.
  2. Evaluate how cannabis use, vaping history, and patient-reported habits may influence sedation planning, prescribing decisions, and chairside risk assessment.
  3. Describe strategies for obtaining a more specific and nonjudgmental health history that supports safer treatment planning and patient communication.
